Program Development 

The Office of Distance Learning (ODL) works with faculty to develop online masters’ programs that use technology to enhance the learning experience at SAIS. The ODL team includes experts in program development, instructional design, and educational technology. Our office assists in developing academically robust programs that use a variety of educational tools to provide a meaningful educational experience for students. We understand how to use technology to improve learning outcomes, not just for technologies’ sake. We would love to help you build a comprehensive program, delivered online, that provides the kind of educational experience that students expect from Johns Hopkins University.

Faculty Development

The Office of Distance Learning (ODL) provides faculty development and training on using various educational technology tools to improve learning and support students. We work with faculty to recommend appropriate tools for specific learning environments to enhance student engagement and learning. The ODL team provides individual and group workshops on using the plethora of tools available to faculty at Johns Hopkins SAIS. Instructional Design

Instructional design is the creation of educational environments and materials that enhance the teaching and learning experience of the Johns Hopkins SAIS community. Working closely with our expert faculty, we assist in developing a wide variety of innovative solutions, from guiding the creation of entire online courses to finding individualized methods of achieving specific learning outcomes. We place a strong emphasis on ensuring a rich and engaging experience for students.

Academic Technology Support

Academic Technology is a family of hardware and software tools that can be integrated into face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses for the specific purpose of enhancing teaching and learning. We explore emerging technology trends, and some of the solutions that we support include:

  • Blackboard, including fundamentals, assignments, grading, discussions, and many more functions
  • Lecture recording in the classroom, home, or another remote location
  • Live virtual sessions in the classroom, including guest speakers
  • Course evaluations
  • Academic integrity and Anti-plagiarism services
  • In-class instant polling (“Clickers”)
